Houston Students prepare for TCAP Writing Assessement Feb. 1st

Posted in Uncategorized by houstonmustangs on January 23, 2011

Houston  11th graders will write the TCAP Writing Assessment on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. The prompt will be persuasive in mode. The persuasive mode is also used in other high stakes testing (AP, ACT, SAT), so this is a form of writing that is very important for all of our students. It is also a form of writing that will impact student success in college and beyond as persuasion is used in every discipline.

1.     HHS will be implementing persuasive writing/speaking/thinking activities in all classes across the curriculum in the month of January.

2.     Mrs. Natalie Parker-Lawrence will host persuasive writing workshops in her room,  M243, from 2:10 – 3:10pm on the following dates:  January 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26.

3.     A presentation of the persuasive mode is available here if students and/or parents wish to review some of the major points.

4.     Students not currently enrolled in 11th grade English but are classified as 11th graders will be involved in a writing seminar during school one period one day per week in January. The seminar will include refresher instruction on persuasive writing and three timed practice essays with feedback from English teachers.

5.     The Tennessee Department of Education has some models of essays (among other information) on their website if students/parents with to review them.

Stay tuned to the Houston High Website as the school will provide resources for review for each EOC assessment.
