Houston High DECA Club’s “Costumes for a Cure” Fashion Show to Benefit St. Jude

The Houston High School DECA club is preparing for one of its most popular and meaningful fundraisers.
“Costumes for a Cure” is an annual fashion show that helps raise money and awareness for St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital. Last year’s event raised $3,000 for St. Jude. This year’s “Costumes for a Cure”
fashion show will be held on Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Houston High auditorium.

SCS Race for Education

The excitement is set for November 14, 2010 at Freeman Park in Bartlett, TN.  Join us for a 5K run/1mile Family Fun Walk.  The 5K race will begin promptly at 2:00 P.M., followed by the 1 mile Family Fun Walk shortly thereafter. There will be entertainment, fun and prizes for children of all ages, so be sure to get there early.  This is a Memphis Runner’s Club sanctioned event and medals will be given to the top three runners in each age group as well as overall winners.   Early registration is available for $20  through 10/30/10.  After 10/30/10, registration increases to $25. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by 11/4/10.  Online Registration closes on 11/5/10.  After this date you may register on race day beginning at Noon for $25. Packets containing your bib, chip, and shirt may be picked up at the registration area of Freeman Park starting at 12:30 pm on race day.

PTSA Citizenship Literature Contest- Deadline Oct. 25th!

Theme:  “We Are United Because …”

Deadline:   Monday, October 25, 2010

The purpose of the contest is to promote and encourage participation in becoming responsible citizens. This year’s theme is “We Are United Because….” The theme opens up many possibilities for interpretation and creativity.

Essays in the high school division should be at least 350 words. Complete contest guidelines and individual student entry forms may be found at:

School winners will be recognized at the November PTSA meeting. The winning entries will be sent to the Shelby County PTA contest. County winners will compete in the TN PTA contest.

Annual Eye Opener 5K Honors Life of Former Houston High Student- October 23

Friends and family of Kyle Kiihnl are preparing for a special annual tribute event for the former Houston High School student. The annual Eye opener 5K will take place on Saturday, October 23 at Shelby Farms Park. Kyle’s life was taken tragically in 2002 in an accident caused by a sleep-impaired driver. The race is held to honor his life and bring awareness to the dangers of sleep-impaired driving. The race has also helped provide nine college scholarships to local students in Kyle’s name over the years. In addition to this year’s 5K race, the event will include a 1-mile fun run and walk around Patriot Lake, as well as a moon bounce and Jammin’ Jammies PJ contest for kids 10 and under. The event will be hosted by FOX13’s Mearl Purvis. There will also be live music from DJ Rockin’ Robin and the chance for one lucky participant to win a Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed valued at $2,000. Mustang Touchdown Club Fundraiser for Senior Scholarship Award

2010 Reflections Contest “Together we can…”

The Reflections contests is a national PTA contest for visual arts, photography, dance choreography, musical composition, literature, and film production.

The 2010-2011 Theme is “Together We Can”

The deadline for submissions is October 14, 2010. The Reflections Awards Ceremony for Houston High School will be held November 4, 2010.

Gleefully Delicious: HHS Dessert Show 2010

The Houston High School Choirs will present their Annual Dessert Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Houston High School Auditorium at 9755 Wolf River Blvd. Admission is $7 and tickets will be available for purchase at the door. You are invited to enjoy great music by local students and delicious desserts.  The event, “Gleefully Delicious,” will feature a variety of musical selections from the hit television show Glee such as  “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Jump,” “Somebody to Love” and “Lean on Me.”
