Houston Choir Golf Classic Rescheduled!

The Houston High School Choirs Spring Golf Classic will be held June 21st at Memphis National Golf Club in Collierville. The tournament fee of $85 includes green fee, cart, goodie bag, door prizes, drinks, and dinner. The Houston Choirs Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, so a portion of the tournament fee is tax deductible. Players registering by June 1 will receive a $10 gift card from Golfsmith. Tournament schedule: Check-in (11:30-1:00); Shotgun Start (1:30); Dinner (6:00). Groh named CA Academic All-Star

George, a senior, is a top student and talented musician. He holds a 3.4 unweighted grade point average and scored 31 on the ACT with a 34 in the English and Reading sections. He has taken a challenging course load filled with Honors and Advanced Placement classes. George received the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Achievement. George has studied piano for ten years and trumpet for six years. He received high honors for eight years from the National Piano Guild and received Superior ratings at the Tennessee Piano Guild state competition. He is the principal trumpet player for the Memphis Youth Symphony. He currently performs in two choirs, a band and an ensemble group with his church. He is a five-year participant in All-West Band. He currently represents Houston High School and Tennessee as a member of the Army All-American Band. In addition, George has danced for four years with the school’s German Folk Dancing Group, sung with a German a cappella men’s group and acted with a German class ensemble. For his efforts, he won several awards at the University
of Memphis Foreign Language Fair. In 2008 George was selected as the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador. He also was selected as a Hall of Fame senior. George was a participant in the Congressional Student Leadership Conference and a recipient of the PTA State Citizenship Essay Award. He also was inducted into the Beta Club. He was selected for and attended the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts for trumpet and was named first chair in the orchestra. George also is a member of the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra and was selected to perform at the Kiwanis Club Young Artist Competition. George also sings with the Germantown UMC Youth Choir, performed with the Handbell Choir, plays keyboards with the Youth Praise Band and plays trumpet in the GUMC Brass Ensemble.

Houston PTSA awards “John Aitken Leadership Grant” to Kinta Noble

HHS Social Studies Teacher Kinta Noble recently received the John Aitken Leadership Grant from the Houston PTSA.

Ms. Noble used the grant money to purchase Character Building curriculum for her Sociology classes.

ESL Teacher recognized as “Teacher of the Year”

Ms. Lee Ann Kelly was selected as the West Tennessee ESL Teacher of the Year in Chattanooga this past weekend at the Tennessee ESL Conference.

Erika Yates recognized as a CA Academic-All Star

Erika, a senior, is a top student and leader. She holds a 4.0 unweighted
grade point average and scored 34 on the ACT. She has been
recognized as a National Merit Commended Student. Erika has been
inducted into the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor
Society and Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. She placed
“Gold” in the National Spanish Exam two consecutive years. She also
earned first place in the Tennessee HOSA (Health Occupations
Students of America) Medical Math state competition. Erika
participated in the 2009 HOSA National Leadership conference and
was honored with a Leadership Academy Leadership Award. The
University of Tennessee Alumni Association recognized her with the
Tennessee Leader of Tomorrow Award. In addition, Erika is an active
member of the Beta Club, Horizons and Student Impact. She believes
in community service and has been involved in a variety of volunteer
activities. She is co-chair of the Houston High School Autism Service
Projects group, an autism fundraising and awareness organization. She
has volunteered with Church Without Doors, Race for Education, Race
for the Cure, Special Education Field Day and other local projects. Erika
also has worked with World Changers locally and in Alaska doing
housing repairs, and volunteered for Hurricane Katrina Clean-Up. Erika
has shown great maturity and determination in effectively balancing a
rigorous college preparatory course load and a personal commitment
to community service.

Houston High School is selling discounted tickets to the April 10 game against the Philadelphia 76er’s.  You can purchase tickets online or from Mrs. Ables in the front office.  There are information sheets in the front office for those of you that are interested.

One of TN’s Top Social Studies Teaching Honors Goes to Houston High’s Michael Robinson!

Houston High School’s own Michael Robinson has been named one of the state’s “Outstanding Social Studies Teachers”of 2010 by the Tennessee Council for the Social Studies (TCSS). Aligned with national Social Studies standards, this award is presented each year in recognition of teaching excellence in the areas of classroom instruction, curriculum development, leadership and community involvement. Robinson will be honored during the 2010 TCSS State Conference next week at the Memphis Hilton. Congratulations!
